Forklifts need a proper maintenance program to help increase the machine's lifespan and is an important factor in allowing the machine to function effectively and safely. Completing regular forklift check ups and performing preventive maintenance regularly will help to ensure the safe and efficient use of the machinery.

Daily Checklist
The daily checklist is an important tool in any forklift maintenance program. These checklists will help to document any and all potential problems. They are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or the OSHA. The daily checklists could also be audited by OSHA during any routine inspection. Drivers need to complete the inspection from the beginning of their shift. If any major issues are found, the forklift is not to be put into service until the issue has been fixed.

Safety and Maintenance Go Hand-in-Hand
Within the United States, there are approximately one hundred deaths related to forklift mishaps and statistic show that almost 20,000 individuals are seriously injured too. This number represents 54 individuals a day, 7 days a week, for the entire year. Many of these accidents can be easily prevented if the forklift had been properly serviced and maintained. In some circumstances, it may seem like a cost savings to skip or delay regular maintenance, although, these savings will pale in comparison to the cost of a single mishap.

Items to be Serviced
The manufacturers owner handbook would include a recommended maintenance schedule. Schedules will differ depending on every manufacturer and each type of forklift. Every schedule would contain various basic things. Like for instance, in a combustion engine, the engine oil and the oil filter should be periodically replaced. Hydraulic levels should be checked as well. Be sure to inspect hoses for any signs of cracking. Other things include the brakes, the transmission and the electrical systems of the forklift.
